Christmas is a time of joy and celebration, for me it is a sacred time to reflect on the beautiful gift that was given to us so long ago. I am now celebrating Christmas in my own way, this was not so in the past. I used to get caught up in the shopping, hosting family and friends I was exhausted by boxing day. I think it is important to celebrate the season in a way that is meaningful to you.
Yesterday we decided to go downtown Toronto and just enjoy some of the festivities around the Eaton Centre mall. The Eaton Centre is fully decorated for Christmas with a 114 feet tall Christmas tree! This year the mall has free light shows with music where the tree lights change in time to music from the Polar Express. Several times throughout the day you can watch the show which lasts for about five minutes. We had a wonderful time walking the mall, looking at the giant reindeer and just relaxing for a night.
After the light show we decided to go to the Bata Shoe Museum. The museum is free on Sundays and is another great way of doing something fun for free. We hopped on the subway from Eaton Centre to St. George street, the museum was a two minute walk from the station. The museum has three floors exhibiting shoes from different countries and cultures over the years. It was a fun break from the hustle of the season and a welcome break from shopping, cooking and entertaining.
There is so much to do at this time of the year that will bring joy and peace. I love going to church to sing Christmas carols, sharing a meal with friends and giving to others in need. My kind of Christmas is slowing down, reflecting on what God has done for me over the past year and sharing a home cooked meal with my family. If celebrating Christmas leaves you exhausted consider doing something different. The season should bring joy, peace and love to all who believe. Walk good.
